  1.                          THE SLIT-LAMP BIOMICROSCOPE

  3. This instrument is composed of two main 
  4. components.  The slit-lamp which is the light 
  5. source and the controls to modify the size, 
  6. shape, direction, color and intensity of the 
  7. light.

  9. The second main component is the 
  10. biomicroscope-the microscope used to view 
  11. the eye.  The magnification can be varied.  
  12.  
  13. The slit-lamp and biomicroscope can be moved 
  14. in relation to the patientusing the joy stick for 
  15. focusing and bringing structures into view.  The 
  16. remaining portions of the instrument are the 
  17. headrest to hold the patient still and the 
  18. adjustable table or stand instrument for holding 
  19. the slit-lamp biomicroscope to position it before the patient.

  21. The accurate term for the instrument is the slit-lamp biomicroscope, however, by convention each individual term is used to refer to the whole instrument.
